Needing one hour and 54 minutes to advance, Fils hit three aces, won 63 percent of his first serve points, broke serve on three occasions and struck 26 winners in total.
Improving to 19-9 on the year, Fils will next face the winner of No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev or Lithuanian qualifier Vilius Gaubas.
Gaubas defeated No. 27 seed Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.
Other winners on the day included No. 10 seed Daniil Medvedev storming past No. 24 seed Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-1.
Medvedev will await the winner of No. 8 seed Lorenzo Musetti, or No. 28 seed Brandon Nakashima.
Matches that are still to come on Sunday will be highlighted by No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz taking on Laslo Djere, and No. 5 seed Jack Draper facing Vit Kopriva.

Sabalenka Wins Eighth Straight Match
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka had to battle her way into the round of 16 of the Rome Masters on Sunday, defeating former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In a match that wouldn’t be classified as her most memorable, Sabalenka hit five aces, four double faults and won only 58 percent of her first serve points.

Matches that are still on deck on Sunday will see No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva and No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng in action.
Monday’s schedule will feature continued fourth-round matches. The tournament lost No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 5 seed Madison Keys on Saturday.
Swiatek has been a shell of her former self after capturing her fourth French Open title last Spring. The 23-year-old has failed to win a title since Roland Garros last year, and will drop down to No. 4 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
Swiatek was the defending champion in Rome.
