Ruud Defeats Medvedev to Reach 2025 Madrid Open Semifinals
Thursday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results
Former French Open finalist Casper Ruud advance to the semifinals of the Madrid Open in Spain on Thursday, defeating former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5.
Needing one hour and 40 minutes to prevail, Ruud hit two aces, won 76 percent of his first serve points, broke serve on two occasions and added 17 winners to his victory.
Capturing his first win over Medvedev in four matches, Ruud will next face either No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo or No. 22 seed and Miami Open winner Jakub Mensik.
The day’s other matches will be highlighted by No. 5 seed Jack Draper taking on Matteo Arnaldi, and No. 10 seed Lorenzo Musetti facing Gabriel Diallo.
WTA Semifinals Set
On the women’s side, top seed Aryna Sabalenka will face No. 17 seed Elina Svitolina, and No. 2 seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek will take on No. 4 seed Coco Gauff.
Sabalenka will be aiming to win her third title of the season, while Svitolina will be trying to keep her winning streak in tack. The Ukrainian won her 18th career title last week in Rouen, France.
Swiatek, who has not won a tournament since claiming her fourth French Open crown last Spring, will take an 11-3 head-to-head lead over her American opponent.
Gauff has had an average year on Tour by her standards, with her standout moment so far being a victory at the Unite Cup in Australia to start the season.
