Swiatek, Osaka and Jarry Advance at 2025 Rome Masters
Thursday’s WTA Results
Thursday’s action at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy saw No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka reach the round of 32.
First up, Swiatek easily dismissed hometown star Elisabetta Cociaretto 6-1, 6-0 in just 52 minutes.
Using her clay-court expertise to great effect, Swiatek hit one ace, won 84 percent of her first serve points, and broke her opponent on five occasions.
Looking to win her first title since Roland Garros last year, Swiatek will next face either No. 29 seed Danielle Collins or Elena-Gabriela Ruse from Romania.
Japanese star Osaka won her seventh straight match on Tour after ousting Viktorija Golubic 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Osaka captured the Challenger title in Saint Malo, France last week. She is currently ranked No. 49 in the world.
Other winners on the day included No. 13 seed Diana Shnaider, Jaqueline Cristian, No. 17 seed Jelena Ostapenko, No. 25 seed Elise Mertens, and American Peyton Stearns. Stearns defeated No. 28 seed Anna Kalinskaya 6-2, 6-3.
Defending Finalist Jarry Reaches Round of 64
Chilean star Nicolas Jarry began his 2025 campaign in style on Thursday in Rome, Italy, dismissing Hugo Gaston from France 7-6(4), 6-4.
Needing one hour and 53 minutes to prevail, Jarry struck 29 winners, broke serve on one occasion, and added four aces to his victory. Jarry will next face No. 17 seed Francisco Cerundolo for a place in the round of 32.
Jarry lost to No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev in last year’s final.
Other winners on Thursday saw Roberto Bautista Agut, Jesper de Jong, Aleksandar Vukic, and Mariano Navone all reach the second round.
Navone will face top seed Jannik Sinner on Saturday. Sinner will be returning to action after a three month doping suspension.
