Wednesday’s action at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy saw four-time former Major winner Naomi Osaka reach the second round, defeating local hero Sara Errani 6-2, 6-3.
Striking seven aces and winning 91 percent of her first serve points, Osaka broke serve on five occasions.
The Japanese star, who recently won a Challenger title in France, will next face No. 9 seed Paula Badosa from Spain on Thursday.
Other winners on the day saw Victoria Azarenka, Kamilla Rakhimova, Caroline Dolehide, Varvara Gracheva, Victoria Mboko, Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Elena-Gabriela Ruse all reach the second round.
Thursday’s schedule of play will include No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 5 seed Madison Keys and No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini.
Thompson Improves to 5-0 against Perricard
Australian Jordan Thompson continued his impressive unbeaten streak against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, defeating the towering Frenchman 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
Overcoming 13 aces, Thompson hit 26 winners, broke serve on two occasions, and won 80 percent of his first serve points.
Improving to 5-0 against Perricard (which includes victories on three different surfaces), Thompson will next face No. 28 seed Brandon Nakashima from the United States.
Other winners on the day saw Camilo Ugo Carabelli, Carlos Taberner, Alexandre Muller, Corentin Moutet, Vit Kopriva, Tallon Griekspoor, Francisco Comesana, Roman Andres Burruchaga, and Dusan Lajovic all advance to the second round.
Lajovic will next take on No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz.
Thursday’s order of play will be highlighted by Fabio Fognini, Roberto Bautista Agut, Federico Cina, Flavio Cobolli, and Brazilian upstart Joao Fonseca.
