Swiatek Defeats Keys in Madrid; Draper Takes out Paul
Wednesday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results
Wednesday’s action at the Madrid Open in Spain saw defending champion Iga Swiatek need three sets to defeat reigning Australian Open winner Madison Keys, winning the contest 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Needing one hour and 36 minutes to advance, Swiatek hit three aces, won 63 percent of her first serve points and broke her American opponent on three occasions.
Playing the best tennis of her career, Keys will next play the Italian Open in Rome.
Swiatek, who will be looking to win her first title since Roland Garros, will next face No. 4 seed Coco Gauff.
Gauff ousted No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-1.
Other matches that are still on deck on Wednesday will feature top seed Aryna Sabalenka taking on No. 24 seed Marta Kostyuk.
No. 17 seed Elina Svitolina continued her great season by dismissing Moyuka Uchijima 6-2, 6-1 in less than one hour later in the day.
Arnaldi Continues Stellar Form in Madrid
Unseeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi continued his fine form in Madrid on Wednesday, defeating two-time US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 7-5.
Dismissing No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic earlier in the week, Arnaldi continued to use his consistent baseline game to offset his American opponent on Wednesday.
Hitting six aces, 23 winners and breaking serve on three occasions, Arnaldi will next face No. 5 seed Jack Draper in the quarterfinals.
Draper easily dispatched No. 11 seed Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-2. Draper is only 140 points beyond Novak Djokovic for the No. 5 ranking in the world.
Other matches on the docket today will see No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur go up against No. 10 seed Lorenzo Musetti, and No. 15 seed Grigor Dimitrov take on lucky loser Gabriel Diallo from Canada.
Thursday’s action in Madrid will featured continued men’s and women’s quarterfinal matches.
