ATP Tour Action Begins on Wednesday
Wednesday’s action in Rome will feature continued first-round action on the women’s side, and the first day of the men’s draw.
Iga Swiatek and Alexander Zverev are the defending champions of the event.
Swiatek has not won a tournament since capturing her fourth title at Roland Garros in 2024, and Zverev has also been struggling. Even though the German did pick up a 500 level victory in his native city of Munich, he has crashed out early in all of the Masters 1000 events so far in 2025.
The 28-year-old reached his third Major final in Australia in January, losing in straight sets to eventual winner Jannik Sinner. The world No. 1 returns to action this week in Rome, where he will play his first match on Saturday after serving a three-month doping suspension.
Zverev has 2200 points to defend from now until the end of the French Open. He lost in the Roland Garros final to Carlos Alcaraz.
Aryna Sabalenka and Alcaraz will also be on hand this week, honing their skills for the French Open later this month.
Sabalenka is in great form, winning recent titles in Miami, Florida and Madrid, Spain, and making the finals in Stuttgart, Germany.
Alcaraz, who started the clay-court season in top gear, has been slowed down by an abductor injury he sustained in the Barcelona final to eventual winner Holger Rune. Alcaraz did pick up another Masters 1000 victory in Monte Carlo, Monaco last month.
