Zverev Survives Madrid Open Marathon; Sabalenka Advances
Sunday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results
Sunday’s action at the Madrid Open in Spain saw top seed Alexander Zverev reach the fourth round, defeating No. 28 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 2-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(0).
Zverev hit 11 aces, 24 winners, and broke serve on two occasions to improve to 5-1 against the Spaniard in lifetime meetings.
The German will next face either No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo or Francisco Comesana, both from Argentina.
Other results on the day saw Brandon Nakashima and Alexander Bublik both advance to the fourth round.
Nakashima took out Flavio Cobolli 7-5, 6-3 and Bublik dismisses defending champion and No. 7 seed Andrey Bublik 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Adding 12 aces to his victory, Bublik’s victory means that Rublev will be ranked No. 17 in the world after the event.
The Russian lost 950 points as a results of his loss.
Other matches the that are still to come on Sunday will include No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz, No. 9 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 12 seed Ben Shelton and No. 14 seed Casper Ruud.
Monday’s matches in Madrid will be highlighted by No. 5 seed Jack Draper, No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur, No. 11 seed Tommy Paul and No. 10 seed Lorenzo Musetti.
No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic crashed out of the event on Saturday, losing another straight set encounter to Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 6-4.
Djokovic, who has not won a Tour event since November 2023, will next see action at the Rome Masters in Italy.
Sabalenka Continues Winning Form
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka needed three sets to advance to the round of 16 in Madrid on Sunday, dismissing Elise Mertens 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Needing two hours to advance, Sabalenka hit six aces, won 66 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on seven occasions.
The Belorussian will next face either Rebeka Masrarova from Switzerland or Peyton Stearns from the United States.
Other results on the day saw No. 24 seed Marta Kostyuk, and former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari advance to the round of 16.
Kostyuk ousted Veronika Kudermetova in three sets, and Sakkari easily dispatched No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1.
Matches that are still on deck on Sunday will include No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 10 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 14 seed Daria Kasatkina.
On Monday, No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, No. 4 seed Coco Gauff and No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva will be in action.
