Tuesday’s WTA Results from Madrid
Alexandra Eala from the Philippines scored another impressive victory on Tuesday at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain, defeating Vikoriya Tomova from Bulgaria 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 16 minutes.
Striking one ace and winning 59 percent of her first serve points, Eala broke her opponent on six occasions.
The 19-year-old will now face the biggest challenge in clay-court tennis when she takes on four-time French Open winner and No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek in the second round.
Swiatek hasn’t won a title since capturing her fourth crown at Roland Garros last Spring and lost to Eala at the Miami Open last month 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
Eala is up to No. 68 in the world (a new career high) after toady’s victory.
Other results on the day saw four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka crash out of the event, losing in three sets to Lucia Bronzetti 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
With today’s loss, Osaka is 9-5 on the year and ranked No. 55 in the world.
Caroline Dolehide from the United States also defeated Elina Avanesyan from Armenia 6-4, 6-4.
Matches that are still to come on Tuesday will include Katie Boulter, Hailey Baptiste and Peyton Stearns.
Wednesday’s action in Madrid will feature men’s and women’s first-round action.
Aryna Sabalenka is the top seed on the women’s side and Alexander Zverev is the No. 1 for the men’s draw.
