Swiatek Reaches Madrid Open Quarterfinals; de Minaur, Paul Advance

Tuesday’s action at the Madrid Open in Spain featured No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek needing three sets to reach the quarterfinals, defeating Russian Diana Shnaider 6-0, 6-7(3), 6-4.
Needing two hours and 34 minutes to advance, Swiatek hit five aces, won 70 percent of her first serve points and broke her opponent on six occasions.
Looking to win her first title since Roland Garros last Spring, Swiatek will next face either No. 5 seed Madison Keys or No. 19 seed Donna Vekic for a place in the semifinals.
Other matches that are still on deck after yesterday’s nation-wide power outage will feature top seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 17 seed Elina Svitolina, No. 21 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and No. 24 seed Marta Kostyuk.
Wednesday’s action in Madrid will be highlighted by women’s quarterfinal action.
De Minuar, Paul and Tiafoe Reach Round of 16
Australian road-runner Alex de Minaur advanced to the fourth-round in Madrid on Tuesday, dismissing Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6(3).
Absorbing the Canadian’s power in style, de Minaur hit one ace, 11 winners, broke serve on two occasions and won 79 percent of his first serve points.
The No. 6 seed will next face either 10 seed Lorenzo Musetti or No. 17 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Other results on the day saw No. 11 seed Tommy Paul defeat No. 24 seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and No. 16 seed Frances Tiafoe dismiss Alexandre Muller 6-3, 6-3.
Tiafoe’s next opponent will be Matteo Arnaldi, and Paul will face the winner of No. 5 seed Jack Draper or No. 30 seed Matteo Berrettini.
Top seed Alexander Zverev, No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 9 seed Daniil Medvedev will be in action later today.
Fourth round action on the mens’ side will continue on Wednesday in Madrid.
