Alcaraz Opens 2025 Wimbledon Title Defense with Five Set Victory

Monday’s action from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club saw defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advance to the second round, defeating former top 10 player Fabio Fognini 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.
Needing four hours and 37 minutes to advance, Alcaraz slammed 14 aces, 52 winners, won 70 percent of his first serve points and broke his Italian opponent on seven occasions.
Advancing to the round of 64, the two-time defending champion will next face Oliver Tarvet.
Tarvet defeated Leandro Riedi from Switzerland 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
Alcaraz defeated seven-time former winner Novak Djokovic in the last two finals.
Other winners on the day included No. 12 seed Frances Tiafoe, No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov, and No. 23 seed Jiri Lehecka.
No. 8 seed Holger Rune, No. 9 seed Daniil Medvedev, and No. 24 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas all crashed out of the event in the opening round.
Medvedev followed up a first round loss at Roland Garros, losing to Benjamin Bonzi 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2. Tsitspas was forced to retire with a back injury, losing to Valentin Royer 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 17 minutes.
Tsitsipas is now coached by former Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanisevic.
Rune squandered a two sets to love lead to lose in five sets to Nicolas Jarry 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 5 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 9 seed Daniil Medvedev will be in action later today.
Tuesday’s action in SW19 will include top seed Jannik Sinner, No. 4 seed Jack Draper, and No. 6 seed Djokovic.
Sabalenka Soars into Round Two
On the ladies side, top seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated inform Canadian Carson Branstine 6-1, 7-5.
Branstine defeated top seed Lois Boisson and former US Open winner Bianca Andresscu in the qualifying rounds.
Sabalenka, who has never won Wimbledon, owns three Grand Slam titles. She also reached the finals of the Australian and French Opens earlier this year.
The Belarussian will face either Lulu Sun or Maria Bouzkova in the round of 64.
Other matches that are still on deck on Monday will see No. 4 seed and last year’s finalists Jasmine Paolini, No. 6 seed Madison Keys and No. 9 seed Paula Badosa in action later today.
Former French Open winner No. 20 seed Jelena Ostapenko was defeated by Sonay Kartal 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
No. 14 seed Elena Svitolina, No. 22 seed Donna Vekic and No. 30 seed Linda Noskova all reach the second round.
Former finalist Ons Jabeur was forced to withdraw trailing Viktoriya Tomova 7-6(5), 2-0.
On Tuesday, No. 2 seed Coco Gauff, No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva will be scheduled to play.
