Sabalenka, Ruud Advance to Third Round of 2025 Madrid Open

Friday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain on Friday, defeating Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-4.

Needing one hour and 37 minutes to advance, Sabalenka hit one ace, broke serve on three occasions and won 75 percent of her first serve points.

The Belorussian will next face either No. 28 seed Elise Mertens or Camila Osorio from Colombia.

Other results on the day saw No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini, No. 14 seed Daria Kasatkina, No. 21 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, Maria Sakkari, Veronika Kudermetova, and Moyuka Uchijima all reach the round of 32.

Matches that are still on deck on Friday will feature No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng and No. 10 seed Elena Rybakina.

Saturday’s schedule in Madrid will be highlighted by No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, and No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva.

Swiatek advanced in an entertaining three-set affair over up-and-coming Filipino star Alexandra Eala on Thursday.

Ruud Wins Opener in Madrid

Former three-time Major finalist Casper Ruud picked up a much-needed victory in Madrid on Friday, dismissing Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4.

Failing to backup his success in Monte Carlo and Barcelona last year, Ruud currently finds himself at No. 15 in the world.

The Norwegian star will look to continue his campaign in the next round against No. 23 seed Sebastian Korda. Korda needed three sets to defeat Italian upstart Federico Cina 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Other results on Friday saw top see Alexander Zverev, No. 9 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo, Alexander Bublik, Benjamin Bonzi, Francisco Comesana and Juan Manuel Cerundolo reach the round of 32.

Juan Manuel, who is the brother of Francisco Cerundolo, defeated last year’s finalist No. 18 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(5), 6-4.

Saturday’s order of play in Spanish Capital will feature No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic, No. 5 seed Jack Draper, No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur and Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca.
