The capital of Spain will be the central focus of the tennis world this week as the world’s best players descend to the Caja Magica for the year’s first duel Masters 1000 event at the Madrid Open.
While Rafael Nadal has officially retired from professional competition, the home-country fans will have plenty of reasons and players to cheer for in 2025.
Alcaraz and Djokovic Headline Madrid
With world No. 1 Jannik Sinner serving his final tournament suspension because of a doping violation, four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz and the tennis Master Novak Djokovic will lead the 96 player field from April 23 – May 4, 2025.
Alcaraz, who is a two-time former winner in Madrid, will be looking to hit his stride with his French Open title defense looming.
Djokovic, who is no stranger to the winners circle in Madrid, will also be one to watch in Madrid. Two years removed from his 40th birthday, Djokovic will be looking to gain as much court time as possible before he heads into Paris in search of his 25th Grand Slam title.
Other players to watch out for in the Capital of Spain will include No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev, US Open finalist Taylor Fritz, clay-court specialist Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Brazilian upstart Joao Fonseca.
Fonseca has been the talk of the tennis world this year and 18-year-old will be one to watch in the month of May.
Since its surface switch in 2009, the Mutua Madrid Open has taken place on clay courts at the striking Caja Magica complex. Spanish players have dominated on home soil, claiming the championship on eight occasions since the tournament’s inception in 2002.
Rafael Nadal stands out with five titles to his name, while rising star Carlos Alcaraz captured back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023. The event also draws major attention off the court, with Real Madrid players frequently spotted in the stands—Cristiano Ronaldo among the high-profile names who’ve shown up to watch the action.
Sabalenka and Swiatek Look for French Open Preparation
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will fully-locked in at the Madrid Open this week as she looks to add the French Open to her trophy mantle latter this month. The top seed will have to fend off the likes of clay-court guru Iga Swiatek, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Jasmine Paolini, Mirra Andreeva, Qinwen Zheng, Paula Badosa and Elena Rybakina.
Sabalenka has previously won the title in Madrid on two occasions, while Swiatek is the defending champion of the event.
Swiatek, who owns five Major titles, has four of them at Roland Garros.
The women’s Mutua Madrid Open will take place from April 22nd to May 4, 2025. The tournament remains a must-see for any tennis fan who loves clay-court tennis.
