Wimbledon 2026 Day 7 Preview: Djokovic Faces Safiullin, Sabalenka Meets Osaka in Blockbuster Clash, Sinner Takes on Mochizuki

The second week of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships begins with a compelling lineup as the world’s biggest stars continue their pursuit of the sport’s most prestigious title. Sunday’s fourth-round action features seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, while former Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Roman Safiullin look to continue memorable runs at the All England Club.

With quarterfinal places on the line, Day 7 offers a fascinating mix of championship pedigree, explosive power, and breakthrough opportunities. Sunday’s schedule includes three marquee contests that could define the remainder of the tournament.

Roman Safiullin vs. Novak Djokovic (7)

Can Safiullin Produce Another Wimbledon Surprise?

Roman Safiullin has quietly become one of the stories of Wimbledon 2026.

After battling injuries over the past season, the Russian has rediscovered the form that previously carried him deep into major tournaments. His confident run through qualifying and into the fourth round demonstrates that his aggressive baseline game remains perfectly suited to grass courts. Safiullin arrives with momentum after eliminating rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca, showing excellent serving, clean ball striking, and the confidence needed to challenge elite opponents.

Standing across the net, however, is arguably the greatest grass-court player of the modern era.

Novak Djokovic continues to build momentum throughout the fortnight. The Serbian has looked increasingly comfortable after every round, using his trademark returning ability, movement, and tactical brilliance to neutralize opponents. His third-round victory further demonstrated that despite entering Wimbledon as the No. 7 seed, he remains among the tournament’s leading title contenders.

Keys to the Match

Safiullin’s first-serve percentage will be critical. He must earn plenty of free points while shortening rallies before Djokovic can establish rhythm from the baseline.

Djokovic, meanwhile, will attempt to extend exchanges, expose Safiullin’s movement, and relentlessly pressure the Russian’s second serve. Few players have ever matched Djokovic’s ability to absorb pace and force opponents into difficult extra shots.

Prediction

Safiullin possesses enough firepower to make portions of the match competitive, but over five sets Djokovic’s experience on Centre Court should prove decisive.

Prediction: Djokovic in four sets.

Aryna Sabalenka (1) vs. Naomi Osaka (14)

A Dream Fourth-Round Match Between Four-Time Grand Slam Champions

This may be the match of Day 7.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka faces former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka in a blockbuster meeting between two of the biggest hitters in women’s tennis. Their showdown has all the ingredients of a classic: elite serving, explosive groundstrokes, multiple Grand Slam titles, and contrasting styles that promise breathtaking shot-making.

Sabalenka has looked every bit the tournament favorite through the opening week. Her powerful serve has consistently earned free points while her aggressive baseline game has overwhelmed opponents before they could settle into rallies. She has controlled matches from the first ball and appears increasingly comfortable on the Wimbledon grass.

Osaka, meanwhile, has produced one of her finest Wimbledon campaigns. Long considered stronger on hard courts, the Japanese star has displayed improved movement and confidence on grass, reaching the fourth round while striking the ball with tremendous authority.

Tactical Battle

Both women possess elite first serves, meaning return games become especially valuable.

Sabalenka will likely attack Osaka’s second serve while using her superior movement to extend rallies whenever possible.

Osaka’s best opportunity lies in taking the initiative immediately, stepping inside the baseline, and dictating with her forehand before Sabalenka can control the center of the court.

Mental resilience may ultimately determine the outcome, particularly if multiple sets are decided by tiebreaks.

Prediction

Expect several momentum swings and spectacular winners from both players. Sabalenka’s consistency over the past twelve months gives her a slight advantage.

Prediction: Sabalenka in three thrilling sets.

Jannik Sinner (1) vs. Shintaro Mochizuki

World No. 1 Meets Japan’s Breakthrough Star

Few players have been more dominant throughout 2026 than Jannik Sinner.

The defending Wimbledon champion has continued his remarkable season with another composed run into the second week. His effortless movement, exceptional return game, and relentless baseline precision have once again established him as the player everyone must beat.

Sinner has yet to show any significant signs of vulnerability during the tournament, winning with remarkable efficiency while preserving valuable energy for the later rounds.

Across the net stands one of Wimbledon 2026’s biggest surprises.

Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki has produced the best Grand Slam run of his career, becoming just the fourth Japanese man in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon fourth round. His all-court creativity, exceptional speed, and willingness to attack have made him one of the tournament’s breakout performers.

Match Analysis

Mochizuki will need to vary pace, use drop shots, approach the net frequently, and avoid engaging in extended baseline exchanges where Sinner excels.

Sinner’s ability to redirect pace and consistently strike deep through both wings should gradually wear down the qualifier’s resistance.

The Italian also owns one of the most effective return games on tour, placing enormous pressure on opponents to maintain high first-serve percentages.

Prediction

Mochizuki has already exceeded expectations this fortnight and should enjoy another memorable Centre Court appearance.

However, defeating the defending champion represents an entirely different challenge.

Prediction: Sinner in straight sets.

Wimbledon 2026 Day 7 Outlook

Sunday marks the official beginning of the championship phase at Wimbledon, where every victory moves players within touching distance of the final weekend.

Novak Djokovic continues his pursuit of another Wimbledon crown and historic Grand Slam success. Aryna Sabalenka faces arguably her toughest challenge yet against Naomi Osaka in a potential instant classic, while defending champion Jannik Sinner seeks another clinical performance as he pursues back-to-back Wimbledon titles.

If the opening week has been any indication, fans should expect another unforgettable day filled with world-class tennis, dramatic momentum swings, and elite performances as the race toward the Wimbledon trophies intensifies. The fourth-round schedule features Djokovic, Sabalenka, Osaka, and Sinner among the headline attractions as the tournament enters its decisive second week.
