Wawrinka Defends Geneva Crown; Tsonga Wins Lyon Title

BANQUE ERIC STURDZA GENEVA OPEN—GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

Top seed Stan Wawrinka defended his Geneva Open title on Saturday in Geneva, Switzerland, dismissing Mischa Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Overcoming the loss of the first set, Wawrinka began to use his net game to great effect against his German opponent. Known for serve and volleying himself, Zverev put forth a respectable performance against the former French Open champion but could not replicate the winning performance by his younger brother Alexander Zverev in Rome, Italy last week.

With the victory, Wawrinka won his 16th career title and improved to 20-8 on the season. The Swiss star will now shift his attention to Roland Garros, which begin tomorrow in Paris, France.

OPEN PARC AUVERGNE-RHÔNE-ALPES LYON—LYON, FRANCE

No. 2 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga captured his third title of 2017 after dismissing No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych 7-6(2), 7-5. Winning his first career clay-court crown, Tsonga displayed great poise throughout the one hour and 47 minute encounter, which displayed power tennis on the slow courts in Lyon. Winning 93 percent of his first serve points and striking 13 aces, Tsonga improved to 5-8 against Berdych in their lifetime meetings. The Frenchman, who previously won in Rotterdam and Marseille to begin the year, improved to 22-8 in 2017.

Berdych, who was aiming to win his 14th career title, defeated top seed Milos Raonic in the semifinals.
