Sabalenka Advances to 2nd Round of 2025 French Open
Sunday’s Results from Roland Garros
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka took one step closer to winning her first French Open title on Sunday in Paris, France, defeating Kamilla Rakhimova from Russia 6-1, 6-0.
Needing a mere one hour to advance, Sabalenka hit five aces, won 71 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on five occasions.
Currently holding three Majors, Sabalenka will next face Lucerzia Stefanini or Jil Teichmann from Switzerland.
Other results on the day saw No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng, No. 13 seed Elina Svitolina, Anna Bondar, Eva Lys, Viktorija Golubic, and 18-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko advance.
Mboko had qualified for the event and will certainly be a player to watch for during the fortnight.
Monday’s action in Paris will feature No. 5 seed and four-time former winner Iga Swiatek facing Rebecca Sramkova. Swiatek has not won a title since winning in Roland Garros last year.
The day’s marquee match will see No. 10 seed Paula Badosa take on four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka. The Japanese star is currently ranked No. 49 in the world.
Paul, Perricard Look to Reach Second Round
No. 12 seed Tommy Paul reached the second round of the French Open on Sunday, defeating hard-hitting Dane Elmer Moller 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.
Paul, who cracked the top 10 earlier this year, will next face Marton Fucsovics. The Hungarian was a straight set winner over Tristan Schoolkate from Australia.
Hamad Medjedovic from Serbia also scored a first-round victory over Kamil Majchrzak.
Towering Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will look to reach the second round when takes on Zizou Bergs from Belgium today.
Perricard consistently hits second serves over 125 MPH and owns two career titles.
Monday’s action in France will feature No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz, No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 7 seed and two-time finalist Casper Ruud.
Sinner will take on Arthur Rinderknech from France, and Alcaraz will go up against Giulio Zeppieri from Italy.
