Ruud Reaches 2025 Madrid Open Final
Friday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results
Two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud made the finals of the Madrid Open in Spain on Friday, defeating No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 7-5.
Needing one hour and 54 minutes to advance, Ruud hit four aces, 17 winners, won 63 percent of his first serve points and broke his opponent on five occasions.
Improving to 4-5 against Cerundolo in lifetime meetings, Ruud will next face either No. 5 seed Jack Draper or No. 10 seed Lorenzo Musetti for a place in Sunday’s final.
Draper defeated Matteo Arnaldi 6-0, 6-4 on Thursday, and Musetti ended the run of Canadian lucky loser Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-3. Daillo led Musetti 4-2 in the first set and defeated No. 15 seed Grigor Dimitrov earlier in the week.
Draper leads Musetti 3-0 in career head-to-head meetings, but all of their previous matches have been contested on indoor hard-courts.
Draper will move up to a career high of No. 5 in the world on Monday as a result of his efforts this week in Madrid. Musetti will also break into the top 10 at No. 8.
Women’s Final Preview: Sabalenka vs. Gauff
Saturday’s women’s final in Madrid will feature world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka taking on No. 4 seed Coco Gauff from the United States.
Sabalenka, who has been in great form as of late, defeated No. 17 seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals. She will take a losing head-to-head of 4-5 against Gauff in Saturday’s final.
Gauff defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 in a lopsided semifinal clash. Swiatek has been a shell of her former self this year, failing to win a title since Roland Garros in 2024.
