Nishikori Flies Into Second Round of 2025 Mutua Madrid Open

Former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori advanced to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain on Thursday, defeating Aleksandar Vukic from Australia 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Picking up his 450 career singles win, Nishikori hit four aces, won 74 percent of his first serve points, broke serve on three occasions and struck 28 winners in total.
The former finalist will next face No. 29 seed Denis Shapovalov for a place in the third round.
Other winners on the day included Luciano Darderi, Gabriel Diallo, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Alexandre Muller.
Brazilian upstart Joao Fonseca will be in action later today against Elmer Moller from Denmark.
Fonseca is currently ranked No. 65 in the world.
Friday’s schedule in Madrid will feature top seed Alexander Zverev, No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz, No. 7 seed Andrey Rublev, No. 8 seed Holger Rune and No. 9 seed Daniil Medvedev.
Rublev is the defending champion of the event. He defeated Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the finals.
Tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the event on Thursday with an abductor injury he sustained in the Barcelona Open final against eventual winner Holger Rune.
Alcaraz previously won in Madrid in 2022 and 2023.

Andreeva Begins Madrid Bid
World No. 7 Mirra Andreeva started her Madrid campaign in style on Thursday, defeating Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4.
In a match that latest one hour and 46 minutes, Andreeva hit three aces, won 76 percent of her first serve points, and broke serve on three occasions.
The 17-year-old Russian will next face No. 27 seed Magdalena Frech from Poland.
Other winners on the day included No. 13 seed Diana Shnaider, No. 16 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, No. 19 seed Donna Vekic, and No. 30 seed Anna Kallinskaya.
On Thursday, top seed and two-time former winner Aryna Sabalenka will be in action. The Belorussian recently won the Miami Open and made the finals in Stuttgart, Germany.
No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini, No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng and No. 9 seed Paula Badosa will also be in action on Friday.
