Swiatek, Gauff and Auger-Aliassime Ousted from Australian Open Fourth Round; Korda Advances

Sunday’s action at the Australian Open featured a slew of high-profile seeds ousted from the year’s first Major.

Women’s top seed Iga Swiatek was dismissed from the competition at the hands of reigning Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina, 6-4, 6-4 and No. 7 seed Coco Gauff saw her event end at the hands of former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, 7-5, 6-3.

Rybakina poured in six aces and 24 winners against the top seed, while Ostapenko hit 30 winners against Gauff during the one hour and 33 minute contest.

Ostapenko and Rybakina will now face off for a place in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula advanced to the final eight after dispatching former Roland Garros winner Barbora Krejcikova, 7-5, 6-2.

Pegula will next face either Victoria Azarenka or Lin Zhu.

On the men’s side, No. 6 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was send crashing out of the event by unheralded Czech Jiri Lehecka, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(2), 7-6(3). Lehecka will next face No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who needed five sets to overcome Jannik Sinner, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Elsewhere, No. 29 seed Sebastian Korda defeated No. 10 seed Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(7), and No. 18 seed Karen Khachanov dismissed No. 31 seed Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-0, 7-6(4).

Monday’s action in Melbourne will see nine-time winner Novak Djokovic take on home-country favourite Alex de Minaur and No. 5 seed Arnya Sabalenka face off against No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic.
