Griekspoor Upsets Top Seed Zverev at 2025 BNP Paribas Open
Friday’s action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California saw top seed Alexander Zverev crash out of the event, losing to Tallan Griekspoor of the Netherlands 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4).
Needing three hours and eight minutes to advance, Griekspoor struck 10 aces, broke his opponent on four occasions and won 70 percent of his first serve points.
Zverev, who was the top seed this week because of the doping suspension of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, will next see action at the Miami Open in Florida.
Griekspoor will next face No. 29 seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard for a place in the fourth round. Mpetshi Perricard advanced when Fabian Marozsan retired after losing the first set 6-4.
Other results on the day saw No. 10 seed Tommy Paul, and No. 18 seed Ugo Humbert reach the third round. Paul ousted countryman Tristian Boyer 6-3, 6-1, and Humbert dismissed former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-3.
Matches that are still on deck on Friday will feature No. 4 seed Casper Ruud, No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 12 seed Holger Rune and No. 16 seed Frances Tiafoe.
On Saturday, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and five-time former winner Novak Djokovic will begin their campaigns. Alcaraz will face Quetin Halys, and Djokovic will take on Botic van de Zandschulp.
Van de Zandschulp advanced when former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios retired midway through second set action with a reoccurring wrist injury. Halys dismissed Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4.

Rybakina Reaches Round Three
No. 7 seed Elena Rybakina advanced to the third round in Indian Wells on Friday, dispatching Dutch player Suzan Lamens 6-3, 6-3.
In a match that lasted one hour and 25 minutes, Rybakina hit five aces, won 77 percent of her first serve points and broke her opponent on four occasions.
The former Wimbledon winner will next face No. 25 seed Katie Boulter for a place in round four. Boulter defeated Irina-Camelia Begu 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-0.
Other women’s players that advanced on Friday featured No. 15 seed Karolina Muchova, No. 18 seed Marta Kostyuk, and Katerina Siniakova.
Seeded players that will see action later today will be highlighted by No.2 seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek, No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng.
Saturday’s action in the California desert will feature top seed Aryna Sabalenka making her first appearance. The Belorussian will take on inform American McCartney Kessler on Stadium 1.
