Sinner to Face Djokovic at 2025 Wimbledon Semifinals

Wednesday’s Results from Wimbledon

No. 6 seed Novak Djokovic took another step closer to securing his 25th career Major at Wimbledon on Wednesday, defeating No. 22 seed Flavio Cobolli 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. 

Playing each other for the second time, Djokovic improved to 2-0 against the Italian in three hours and 11 minutes. 

Hitting 13 aces, 38 winners, breaking serve on six occasions and winning 75 percent of his first serve points, Djokovic will next face top seed Jannik Sinner.

Sinner advanced past No. 10 seed Ben Shelton 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4. 

Djokovic last won a Major at the 2023 US Open in New York. 

Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals after his opponent Grigor Dimitrov retired after being up two sets to love and 2-all in the third set. Dimitrov unfortunately suffered a pectoral injury after hitting a serve in the fourth game of the third set. 

Sinner, who is also attempting to win his first Wimbledon title, injured his elbow during a fall in the first game of the match. His fitness wass unknown entering the encounter with Shelton on Wednesday. 

Shelton continues to enthral the crowds in London with his powerful play. The American has made the quarterfinals or better at three of the four Majors during his career, and recently made the fourth round of the French Open, losing to eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz in one of the best matches of the event. 

The men’s second semifinal will feature Alcaraz taking on No. 5 seed Taylor Fritz. 

Alcaraz dismissed Cameron Norrie in straight sets on Tuesday, and Fritz ousted No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov in four sets to advance to the final four. Fritz has won two grass-court events heading into Wimbledon. 

Alcaraz owns a 2-0 lead over Fritz in lifetime meetings. Both matches have been played on hard-courts.

Swiatek, Bencic Reach Semifinals

Five-time Major winner Iga Swiatek and Swiss player Belinda Bencic advanced to the semifinals of Wimbledon on Wednesday. 

Bencic took out Russian sensation Mirra Andreeva 7-6(3), 7-6(2), and Swiatek defeated No. 19 seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-2, 7-5.

Needing two hours and eight to progress, Bencic hit 20 winners, one ace, broke serve on one occasion and won 73 percent of her first serve points.

Reaching her first career Major semifinal, Bencic will next face No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek for a place in the finals.

Swiatek leads Bencic 3-1 in head-to-head meetings.

Swiatek has never particularly thrived on grass-courts, but recently made the finals in Berlin, Germany, losing to world No. 3 Jessica Pegula.

The women’s second semifinal will feature top seed Aryna Sabalenka facing inform American and No. 13 seed Amanda Anisiamova.

Sabalenka defeated Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals, and Anisimova ousted Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia.

Sabalenka and Anisimova have played on eight occasions, with Anisimova leading their head-to-head 5-3.
