Tommy Paul Reaches Fourth Round of 2025 BNP Pariabs Open; Swiatek Advances
Sunday’s action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California featured fan-favourite Tommy Paul reach the round of 16, taking out former champion Cameron Norrie 6-3, 7-5.
Paul, the No. 10 seed this week in Palm Springs, needed one hour and 33 minutes to dismiss his British opponent.
Hitting 24 winners, six aces, and breaking serve on six occasions, Paul will next face No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev or fellow American Alex Michelsen.
Other winners on the day saw Tallan Griekspoor oust No. 29 seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6(3), 6-3, and No. 8 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas dismiss No. 28 seed Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-3.
Griekspoor had defeated top seed Alexander Zverev in the second round.
Matches that are still to come on a glorious Sunday in the Coachella Valley will include No. 12 seed Holger Rune and No. 16 seed Frances Tiafoe.
Monday’s schedule in California will be highlighted by No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz taking on No. 27 seed Denis Shapovalov in the popcorn match of the day.
Alcaraz is the two-time defending champion, and Shapovalov is having one the best starts to a season in his career.
The 25-year-old Canadian won the 500 level event in Dallas defeating three, top 10 players and reached the semifinals of the 500 level tournament in Acapulco, Mexico.
Alcaraz leads the pair’s head-to-head meetings 1-0.
Swiatek Advances in Title Defense
Defending champion Iga Swiatek took another step towards back-to-back titles in Indian Wells, defeating Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-0, 6-2.
In a match that lasted one hour and six minutes, Swiatek added one ace, won 80 percent of her first serve points and broke her opponent on five occasions.
Looking to capture her 23rd career title this week, Swiatek will next face No. 15 seed Karolina Muchova or Katarina Siniakova for a place in the quarterfinals.
Other winners on the day included No. 18 seed Marta Kostyuk. The Ukrainian ousted Caroline Dolehide from the United States 6-3, 6-3.
Featured players that are still on deck on Sunday will include No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 7 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng.
Monday’s schedule in Palm Springs will be highlighted by top seed Aryna Sabalenka taking on Lucia Bronzetti from Italy.
Sabalenka took out McCartney Kessler from the States 7-6(4), 6-3 on Saturday.
No. 3 seed Coco Gauff will be back in action against last year’s finalist Maria Sakkari.
Sakkari leads Gauff 5-3 in career head-to-head meetings.
