US Open 2025 Quarterfinal Preview: Can Sinner, Swiatek, Osaka or Auger-Aliassime Seize the Spotlight?
Wednesday’s Previews and Results from the 2025 US Open
Wednesday’s action at the 2025 US Open will feature four enticing quarterfinal encounters.
First up, top seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner will take one step closer to his fifth Grand Slam when he faces countryman Lorenzo Musettil.
Owning a 2-0 series lead over the No. 10 seed, Sinner should face little adversity in reaching the final four of the event.
Sinner has been the standout player on hard-courts the last two seasons, and his form during the event continues to prove that he is the gold standard when it comes to excellence on hard-courts.
The day’s second quarterfinal match will see No. 8 seed Alex de Minaur take on inform Canadian No. 23 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime owns a 2-1 head-to-head lead over de Minaur, and has already defeated No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev and No. 15 seed Andrey Rublev during the fortnight.
Auger-Aliassime reached the semifinals of the US Open in 2021, and will be looking to improve on his current ranking of No. 18 in the world when he faces the Australian later today.
De Minaur has never reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam event, making it to the quarterfinal stage of five previous Grand Slam tournaments.
On Tuesday, 24-time Major winner Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals in New York, defeating No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
Needing three hours and 24 minutes to advance, Djokovic improved to 11-0 against Fritz in lifetime meetings. Djokovic also moved up to No. 4 in the world with his latest victory.
Djokovic has now reached the semifinals of all four Majors this year.
The legendary Serb will next face former winner and current world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz on Friday.
Alcaraz easily dismissed Jiri Lehecka from the Czech Republic 64 62 64 earlier in the day.
Djokovic currently owns a 5-3 head-to-lead over Alcaraz, and has defeated the Spaniard on two straight occasions.
Djokovic has also never lost to Alcaraz on hard-courts. However, Alcaraz is in peak form and has not lost a set during the tournament and has made the finals of the last seven events that he’s entered.
If Alcaraz wins the US Open, he will be ranked No. 1 in the world over Sinner. The 22-year-old captured the French Open over Sinner earlier this Spring in five, epic sets. He lost subsequently lost to Sinner in the Wimbledon finals in July.
Swiatek, Osaka featured on Wednesday
Six-time Major winner Iga Swiatek and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka return to quarterfinal action at the US Open on Wednesday.
The day session will feature Swiatek going up against No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova in a rematch of the Wimbledon final. Winning that match 6-0, 6-0, Swiatek will be the overwhelming favourite to defeat the American during the day session today.
Swiatek is entering the US Open off of a victory at the Cincinnati Open, and will be difficult to defeat this fortnight.
The night session will feature Osaka facing No. 11 Karolina Muchova in a shot-makers dream match.
Both players possess top-level qualities of their own. Their head-to-head is currently tied at 2-all, and both players love playing on hard-courts.
Osaka has been in slightly better form as of late, but Muchova’s all-court game should bode well for her in reaching the semifinals.
On Wednesday, top seed Aryna Sabalenka reached the semifinals after former Wimbledon winner Markrta Vondrousova was forced to withdraw with a knee injury she sustained during her fourth-round victory over No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina.
Sabalenka will now be well rested when she faces American Jessica Pegula in a rematch of the 2024 US Open final on Thursday.
Pegula poured in a comprehensive victory over Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-3.
The American has won three titles this year, but trails Sabalenka 7-2 in career head-to-head meetings. Sabalenka has also won the last three matches against Pegula, all on hard-courts.
The women’s semifinals will take place on Thursday in Flushing Meadows, New York, followed by the men’s semifinals on Friday, the women’s final on Saturday, and the men’s final on Sunday.
