Thirty-Five Americans Set to Compete in Wimbledon Singles, the Most since 1999
Thirty-five Americans — 19 women and 16 men — are set to compete in the Wimbledon singles main draws beginning next week, the most since the exact same tallies in 1999 (35 total; 19 women, 16 men).
The 26-year high mark for Wimbledon main draw singles players is the latest superlative for American pro tennis this Grand Slam season:
- Eight Americans reached the Round of 16 at the French Open, the most in 40 years. Coco Gauff’s singles title there made her the youngest American to triumph at Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2002.
- When Ben Shelton joined Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in the ATP Top 10 following Roland Garros, it marked the first time three American men were ranked in the Top 10 since 2006.
- Four American women remain ranked in the Top 10, which was a first-in-20-years achievement when it first happened last fall. Three U.S. women were ranked in the Top 5 as recently as early May — a first since 2003.
The Wimbledon singles main draw begins on Monday.
