Monday’s opening day action at the US Open featured Iga Swiatek breezing into the second round of the event, ousting Rebecca Peterson 6-0, 6-1.
Swiatek will next face Daria Saville on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari lost to Rebeka Masarova 6-4, 6-4, and Sara Sorribes Tormo dismissed No. 28 seed Anhelina Kalinina 6-4, 7-5.
Other winners on the Monday saw No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina, No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova, No. 15 seed Belinda Bencic, No. 18 Victoria Azarenka and No. 19 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia all reaching the second round.
No. 16 seed Veronika Kudermetova was dismissed by Bernarda Pera.
Men’s Results:
On the men’s side, No. 4 seed Holger Rune continued to struggle on Tour, losing in four sets to Roberto Carballes Baena. Rune last won a Tour match at Wimbledon.
Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Casper Ruud, No. 10 seed Frances Tiafoe, No. 21 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and No. 22 seed Adrian Mannarino all reached the next round.
Former champion Dominic Thiem turned back the clock to dismiss No. 25 seed Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
During the night session, American favourite Coco Gauff and legendary Serb Novak Djokovic both advanced to the round of 64. Gauff needed three sets to overcome Laura Siegemund and Djokovic reached the second round by only losing a total of five games against Alexandre Muller.
Gauff will next face Mirra Andreeva and Djokovic will take on Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
Tuesday’s schedule of play will feature Daniil Medvedev, Jessica Pegula, Venus Williams and top seed Carlos Alcaraz.
