Friday’s action at the Western & Southern Open featured top seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek advancing to Saturday’s semifinals.
First up, Swiatek eased past Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and will next face Coco Gauff. The young American blitzed past Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2. Swiatek leads Gauff 7-0 in career matches.
On the men’s side, Alcaraz needed all of his grit and experience to advance past qualifier Max Purcell in three sets.
Alcaraz, who is aiming to win his first title in Cincinnati, will face Hubert Hurkacz for a place in Sunday’s final. Hurkacz ousted qualifier Alexei Popyrin 6-1, 7-6(8).
Alcaraz leads Hurkacz 2-0 in career head-to-head meetings.
Still to come on Friday, No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic will take on No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 16 seed Alexander Zverev faces Adrian Mannarino.
On the women’s side, Karolina Muchova will meet Marie Bouzkov and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka will square off with No. 5 see Ons Jabeur.
Saturday’s matches will be highlighted by both the men’s and women’s semifinals.
