Sonego Wins Fourth Career Title Over Michelsen at Winston-Salem Open
Saturday’s action at the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina featured Italian star Lorenzo Sonego capturing his fourth career title, defeating American Alex Michelsen 6-0, 6-3.
Needing one hour and four minutes to seal his victory, Sonego struck 19 winners, won 87 percent of his first serve points and broke the serve of the No. 11 seed on four occasions.
Improving to 18-21 on the season, Sonego will move up to No. 48 in the world when Monday’s rankings are updated.
Michelsen, who was playing in his third career final, previously lost in the finals of the Infosys Hall of Fame Open the last two years.
Known for having one of the better backhands on Tour, Michelsen will move up to No. 49 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
Michelsen is part of a strong group of American players ranked inside the world’s top 50. There are currently eight American men ranked inside the world’s top 50 players.
Sonego and Michelsen will next see action at the 2024 US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.
The US Open is the year’s final Grand Slam event.
Serbian legend Novak Djokovic is the defending men’s champion, while home-country hero Coco Gauff is the defending women’s champion.
