Sonego Defeats Goffin, Reaches Winston-Salem Final
Italian star Lorenzo Sonego reached his sixth career final on Friday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, defeating former top 10 player David Goffin 6-3, 6-2.
In a match that featured two of the games better baseline players, Sonego struck 18 winners, won 75 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions.
Needing one hour and 19 minutes to advance, Sonego will now await the winner either No. 11 seed Alex Michelsen or former champion Pablo Carreno Busta.
Michelson ousted fellow American Christoper Eubanks 7-5, 6-7(6), 7-6(5) in two hours and 29 minutes in the quarterfinals, while Carreno Busta needed two clean-cut sets to defeat Learner Tien, 6-4, 6-2.
The Winston-Salem Open is the final ATP Tour warm-up event for next week’s US Open Tennis Championships from Flushing Meadows, New York.
Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff are the defending men’s and women’s singles champions.
