Sinner, Swiatek, Monfils and Svitolina Reach 2025 Australian Open Fourth Round
Saturday’s action at the 2025 Australian Open featured top seed Jannik Sinner breeze into the fourth-round, defeating American Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Needing just over two hours to complete his victory, Sinner struck eight aces, won 82 percent of his first serve points, broke serve on five occasions and hit 35 winners.
The defending champion will next face No. 13 seed Holger Rune.
Rune reach the round of 16 after he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in a late night affair, 6-7(5), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Rune has spent over 10 hours on court through his first three matches, while Sinner has seen close to seven and a half hours of competition during the first week of the event.
Sinner and Rune have played on four occasion, with the pair splitting their first four encounters.
Other results on the day featured No. 8 seed Alex de Minaur advancing over No. 31 seed Francisco Cerundolo, Gael Monfils upsetting No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz in four sets, and No. 21 seed Ben Shelton powering past No. 16 seed Lorenzo Musetti in four sets.
Americans Alex Michelsen and Learner Tien also progressed to the fourth-round. Michelsen defeated No. 19 seed Karen Khachanov in straight sets, and Tien dispatched Corentin Moutet in three sets.
Italian Lorenzo Sonego rounded out the day’s victories by defeating Fabian Marozsan in four sets.
Sunday’s schedule in Melbourne will feature No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic.
Swiatek Rolls Past Raducanu
No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek rolled past former US Open winner Emma Raducanu on Saturday in Melbourne Park, defeating the Brit 6-1, 6-0.
In a one sided match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes, Swiatek struck 24 winners and broke serve on five occasions.
Yet to drop a set or lose more than four games in a set during her first, three matches, Swiatek will next face lucky loser Eva Lys from Germany. The 23-year-old dismissed Jaqueline Cristian from Romania 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Other winners on Day 8 were highlighted by No. 6 seed Elena Rybakina, No. 8 seed Emma Navarro, No. 9 seed Daria Kasatkina and No. 28 seed Elina Svitolina.
Svitolina joined her husband Gael Monfils in the second week of the event after she also defeated No. 4 seed Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Svitolina has made the fourth round or better of the Australian Open on five occasions. She will next face Veronika Kudermetova, who dismissed No. 15 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-2.
Sunday’s order of play Down Under will see top seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff and No. 11 seed Paula Badosa look for quarterfinal positions.
