Sinner Battles Past Rune to Reach Australian Open 2025 Quarterfinals
Monday’s action at the Australian Open saw top seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner shake off illness and a determined Holger Rune to reach the quarterfinals.
Advancing by a scoreline of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, Sinner hit 14 aces, won 83 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on four occasions during the three hour and 13 minute contest.
Improving to 3-2 against Rune in lifetime meetings, Sinner will next face No. 8 seed Alex de Minuar for a place in the semifinals.
De Minuar ousted American Alex Michelsen 6-0, 7-6(5), 6-3 in two hours and nine minutes.
Sinner owns a 9-0 career head-to-head lead over de Minuar on Tour.

Other results on the day included No. 21 seed Ben Shelton advancing over Gael Monfils 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 1-0 retire, and flamboyant Italian Lorenzo Sonego defeating American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Tien had defeated defending finalist and No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev earlier in the event in five sets.
Alcaraz vs. Djokovic
Tuesday’s action in Melbourne will feature No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz taking on No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic in the popcorn match of the event thus far, and No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev facing newly-crowned top 10 player and No. 12 seed Tommy Paul.
Swiatek Continues to March On
Five-time former Major winner Iga Swiatek continued her march toward another Grand Slam victory on Monday in Melbourne, defeating Eva Lys from Germany 6-0, 6-1 in 59 minutes.
Swiatek, who owns four French Open titles and one US Open trophy, struck three aces, won 81 percent of her first serve points and hit 28 aces.
The 23-year-old will next face No. 8 seed Emma Navarro, who defeated No. 9 seed Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 later in the day.
Other fourth-round results on Monday included inform American Madison Keys improving to 11-1 on the season after taking out former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, and No. 28 seed Elina Svitolina reaching the quarterfinals after she dismissed Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 23 minutes.
Tuesday’s action Down Under will feature top seed Aryna Sabalenka taking on No. 27 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and No. 3 seed Coco Gauff facing No. 11 seed Paula Badosa.
