Shelton, Bencic Reach Quarterfinals of 2025 BNP Paribas Open
American Ben Shelton continued to enjoy the conditions at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California on Wednesday, defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima 7-6(1), 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals.
Shelton, who has one of the biggest serves on Tour, has opted for hitting many topspin serves on the high, bouncing surface.
Hitting six aces, winning 73 percent of his first serve points and breaking serve on three occasions, Shelton will next face either No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz or No. 13 seed Jack Draper for a place in the semifinals.
Shelton is currently ranked No. 12 in the world.
Other matches that are still to come on Wednesday will include No. 2 seed and defecting champion Carlos Alcaraz taking on No. 14 seed Grigor Dimitrov and No. 9 seed Alex de Minuar facing No. 25 seed Francisco Cerundolo.
Thursday’s schedule in Palm Springs will be highlighted by No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 12 seed Holger Rune, No. 20 seed Arthur Fils and Dutch star Tallon Griekspoor.
Griekspoor ousted top seed Alexander Zverev in opening round action.
Bencic Continues to Shine
Olympic Gold medal winner Belinda Bencic powered into the quarterfinals in Indian Wells on Wednesday, defeating former US Open winner Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
In a match lasting two hours and 20 minutes, Bencic won 69 percent of her first serve points and broke her American opponent on three occasions.
Tying her head-to-head meetings with Gauff at 2-2, Bencic will next face either No. 5 seed Madison Keys or No. 19 seed Donna Vekic.
Other matches on the docket on Wednesday will include top seed Aryna Sabalenka taking on Sonay Kartal, and No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini taking on No. 24 seed Liudmila Samsonova.
Thursday’s order of play in the Coachella Valley will see defending champion and No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek facing No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng, and No. 9 seed Mirra Andreeva go up against No. 23 seed Elina Svitolina.
