RISING TENNIS STAR BRANDON NAKASHIMA AWARDED WILD CARD FOR
UPCOMING SAN DIEGO OPEN ATP 250 TOURNAMENT AT BARNES TENNIS CENTER
20-Year-Old Native San Diegan Currently Ranked No. 84 in FedEx ATP Rankings

SAN DIEGO – (September 3, 2021) – Rising tennis star Brandon Nakashima has accepted a Wild Card into the main draw of the $600,000 San Diego Open. The ATP 250-Level tournament is scheduled to be played Monday, September 27 through Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Barnes Tennis Center.

Nakashima, a native San Diegan, is currently ranked No. 84 in the FedEx ATP rankings after establishing a career-high No. 83 last month. He is one of the most improved players on the ATP Tour having moved up more than 80 spots in the rankings after finishing 2020 ranked No. 166.

This past Monday at the US Open, Nakashima scored one of the biggest wins of his young career when he eliminated fellow American and 19th seed John Isner 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the first round. Nakashima overcame 26 aces against the 36-year-old Isner in his straight-set victory which took two-hours and 26 minutes.

Earlier this summer, following a first-round loss at Wimbledon after qualifying for the main draw, Nakashima put together two impressive back-to-back weeks as he reached the finals of ATP tournaments in Los Cabos, Mexico and Atlanta.

The 20-year-old Nakashima is the youngest of the 14 Americans ranked in the ATP Top 100.  A graduate of High Bluff Academy in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Nakashima, played one year of collegiate tennis at University of Virginia and was named 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year before turning professional.

“I am so happy to have the chance to play an ATP Tour level tournament in San Diego. It’s a dream come true to compete in an event like the San Diego Open in my hometown,” said Nakashima.

“When I step on the court at the Barnes Tennis Center for my first match of the tournament in front of a home crowd, it’s going to be a very special moment in my career,” Nakashima added. “San Diego has great tennis fans and I really want them to come out and support this event.”

“Tennis fans attending the tournament are going have the opportunity to see a star of the future,” said San Diego Open Tournament Director Ryan Redondo, “With his talent and all-court game, I believe Brandon has the potential to be a Top 20 player.”
