Navone, Jianu Advance to Second Round in Bucharest
Monday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results
Monday’s action at the Tiriac Open presented by UniCredit Bank in Bucharest, Romania featured No. 7 seed Mariano Navone needing nearly two hours to reach the second round, defeating Laslo Djere from Serbia 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
Navone, who is one of the best clay-court players in the world, hit one ace, won 73 percent of his first serve points and broke his opponent on four occasions.
Improving to 8-9 on the season, Navone will next face Marton Fucsovics or Luca Nardi for a place in the quarterfinals.
Other matches that are still to come on Monday will include Botic van de Zandschulp taking on French veteran Richard Gasquet. Gasquet is playing in his final year on Tour.
Filip Cristian Jianu from Belgium scored a victory earlier in the day against American Nishesh Basavareddy 6-3, 6-4.
Tuesday’s schedule in Bucharest will be highlighted by three-time former Major winner Stan Wawrinka facing Timofey Skatov from Kazakhstan.
Wawrinka recently turned 40-years-old.
Marrakech and Houston Action
Over in Marrakech, Morocco, former top 10 player Fabio Fogini will face Raphael Collignon for a second round birth.
Fognini is currently ranked No. 99 in the world.
The ATP Tour 250 event in Houston, Texas will also kick off on Monday with No. 5 seed Alex Michelson taking on fellow American Learner Tien and Jenson Brooksby facing Taro Daniel from Japan.
Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe are the top two seeds in the event. They will both see action later in the week.
WTA Action in Charleston Begins
The 500 level tournament in Charleston, South Carolina begins today with American Caty Mcnally going up against Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine.
Top seeds Jessica Pegula and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys will play their first round matches later this week.
