Mensik Wins First Masters 1000 Title at Miami Open Over Djokovic
Sunday’s Results from the Miami Open
Sunday’s action from the Miami Open presented by Itau featured No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic failing to win his 100th career title, losing to unseeded Czech and 19-year-old Jakub Mensik 7-6(4), 7-6(4).
Winning his first-ever title in South Florida, Mensik will jump to No. 24 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
The Czech star hit 14 aces, won 77 percent of his first serve points and broke the Serbian legend on one occasion.
Tying his head-to-head with Djokovic at 1-1, Mensik denied Djokovic of winning his 100th career title and seventh at the Miami Open.
Not losing a set until Sunday’s final, Djokovic was visibly hampered by a stye infection to his right eye.
Djokovic was aiming to win his first Tour title since capturing the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy in November of 2023.
The soon-to-be 38-year-old owns every major title in tennis, including the Olympic Gold medal.
Mensik, who was taking part in his second-career Tour final, ousted an impressive array of opponents throughout the event. He dismissed No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz, recent BNP Paribas Open winner Jack Draper, and No. 17 seed Arthur Fils earlier in the event.
Born in Prostejov, Czechia, Mensik will now be seeded at the year’s next Major at Roland Garros in late May.
Women’s Final Recap: Sabalenka Reigns Supreme
Saturday’s women’s final recap saw world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka win her first-ever Miami Open title against American No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula.
Marching to the title by a scoreline of 7-5, 6-2, Sabalenka now owns 19 career titles and has a healthy 3071 point lead over world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the world rankings.
Sabalenka and Pegula will now shift their focus to the European clay-court season as preparations for the French Open begin.
