Medvedev, Tsitsipas Advance in Shanghai; Muchova Ousts Sabalenka in Beijing
No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev continued his strong season on the ATP Tour on Friday in Shanghai, China, defeating Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-5, 7-5.
Recently losing to eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz in the Beijing semifinals over the weekend, Medvedev rebounded in his first match in Shanghai to win 73 percent of his first serve points, hit six aces and strike 17 winners.
Tying his head-to-head matches with Seyboth Wild at 1-1, Medvedev will next face Matteo Arnaldi for a place in the round of 32.
Arnaldi defeated Zachary Svajda 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-4.
Elsewhere, No. 10 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas picked up a much-needed victory over Kei Nishikori, dismissing the Japanese star 7-6(6), 6-4.
Tsitsipas will next take on Alexandre Muller, who defeated No. 18 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-2.
Other winners on the day saw No. 11 seed Tommy Paul, No. 14 seed Ben Shelton, No. 19 seed Alejandro Tabilo, No. 30 seed Tomas Machac and No. 31 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry all advance to the round of 32.
No. 8 seed Casper Ruud was dispatched by qualifier Aleksandar Vukic 6-4, 6-4.
Rudd has had up-and-down results after reaching the semifinals of Roland Garros.
Saturday’s action-packed line up in Shanghai will feature Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

Unseeded Karolina Muchova improved to 2-1 in lifetime meetings against top seed Aryna Sabalenka on Friday in Beijing, China, ousting the top seed 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-4.
Needing two hours and 46 minutes to advance, Muchova hit five aces and won 66 percent of her first serve points. The Czechia star will next face home-country hero Qinwen Zheng. The Olympic Gold Medalist defeated up-and-coming Russian Mirra Andreeva 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
Saturday’s other semifinal will feature No. 4 seed Coco Gauff taking on No. 15 seed Paula Badosa.
