Medvedev, Tsitsipas Crash Out of Montreal Masters
Thursday’s action at the National Bank Open in Montreal, Canada saw former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev bow out in his opening match, losing in three sets to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Needing one hour and 55 minutes to advance, Davidovich Fokina slammed three aces, won 64 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on four occasions.
Davidovich Fokina, who reached the semifinals in Toronto last year, will next face either Matteo Arnaldi or No. 16 seed Karen Khachanov.
Elsewhere, former US Open finalist Kei Nishiori picked up a much-needed victory, ousting No. 8 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4.
Using his off-the-rise game to great effect, Nishikori hit 13 aces and broke the serve of his Greek opponent on three occasions.
The Japanese star will next face No. 12 seed Ugo Humbert or Nuno Borges.
Still to come on Thursday, top seed Jannik Sinner will see his first action of the event against qualifier Borna Coric.

Kalinskaya, Kostyuk Advance in Toronto
Over in Toronto, No. 10 seed Anna Kalinskaya breezed by Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 6-2.
Hitting two aces and winning 67 percent of her first serve points, Kalinskaya will next face No. 5 seed Daria Kasatkina or Amanda Anisamova.
Elsewhere, No. 11 seed Marta Kostyuk and No. 14 seed Diana Shnaider reached the round of 32.
Players that ware still on the schedule today will include No. 2 seed Coco Gauff during the day session and top seed Aryna Sabalenka and four-time Major will Naomi Osaka under the lights.
