National Bank Open—Canada
Wednesday’s action at the National Bank Open in Toronto saw tournament favourite and No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev breeze by Matteo Arnaldi 6-2, 7-5.
The former US Open winner will next face Lorenzo Musetti for a place in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Elsewhere, No. 4 seed and recent Los Cabos winner Stefanos Tsitsipas was sent packing by entertaining Frenchman Gael Monfils. Recording a 6-4, 6-3 victory, Monfils will take on either Sebastian Korda or Aleksandar Vukic on Thursday.
Hometown favourite Milos Raonic continued his strong week, ousting Taro Daniel 6-4, 6-3. The Canadian will see Mackenzie McDonald in the next round. The American poured in an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev.
Results in Montreal
Over in Montreal, top seed Iga Swiatek dismissed Karolina Pliskova 7-6(6), 6-2. The world No. 1 set up a French Open finals rematch with No. 14 seed Karolína Muchova on Thursday.
Other women’s results saw No. 4 see Jessica Pegula, No. 6 seed Coco Gauff, No. 10 seed Daria Kasatkina, No. 12 seed Belina Bencic and No. 15 seed Liudmila Samsonova all reaching the third round.
Still to come on Wednesday in Montreal and Toronto, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari, No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 5 seed Holger Rune will all be on court.
Thursday’s action at the National Bank Open will be highlighted by Swiatek, Raonic, Medvedev and Gauff.
