Top seed Daniil Medvedev won his fourth career Masters 1000 title on Sunday in Toronto, Canada, defeating first-time finalist Reilly Opelka 6-4, 6-3. Nullifying the potent serve of his opponent from the onset of the match, Medvedev kept the towering American to only eight aces throughout the one hour and 25 minute contest.
Slamming six aces of his own, Medvedev won 88 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions. Never conceding his own delivery, Medvedev improved to 4-1 against Opelka in lifetime meetings, and now trails world No. 1 Novak Djokovic by 1,493 points for the top spot on the computer.
Opelka, who defeated second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios earlier in the event, will be ranked No. 23 in the world on Monday.
On the women’s side, hard-hitting Italian Camila Giorgi captured her third career title in scintillating fashion over former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 7-5 in Montreal. Hitting seven aces during the one hour and 40 minute encounter, Giorgi continued to play her aggressive style of tennis throughout both sets.
Defeating Coco Gauff and Petra Kvitova earlier in the event, Giorgi also collected her third straight victory over her Czech opponent.
Pliskova, who had dismissed top seed Aryna Sabalenka, Donna Vekic and Amanda Anisimova earlier in the tournament, was aiming to win her 17 career title on Sunday. The Czech star will be ranked No. 4 in the world on Monday. Giorgi, who entered Montreal ranked No. 71, will see her ranking hit No. 34 when the latest rankings are released.
Both women’s and men’s tours will now head to Cincinnati, Ohio to contest the Western & Southern Open.
