Thursday’s action at the US Open featured No. 5 Ons Jabeur advancing to her second career Major final after defeating No. 17 seed Caroline Garcia 6-1, 6-3.
Needing one hour and six minutes to prevail, Jabeur hit eight aces, won 83 of her first serve points and broke serve on four occasions.
Continue a dream season, Jabeur will next face either top seed Iga Swiatek or No. 6 seed Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday’s final. Jabeur also reached the finals of Wimbledon, losing to Elena Rybakina.
Swiatek ousted American favourite and No. 8 seed Jessica Pegula 6-3, 7-6(4) on Wednesday evening, while Sabalenka dismissed hard-hitting Czech and No. 22 seed Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 7-6(4) earlier in the day.
Friday’s schedule of play at Flushing Meadows will see the men’s semifinals take to the court. No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz will face American Frances Tiafoe, while No. 5 seed Casper Ruud meets No. 27 seed Karen Khachanov.
Alcaraz and Ruud both have opportunities to leave Flushing Meadows as the No. 1 ranked player in the world. Alcaraz poured in one of the performances of the year on Wednesday night when he dispatched No. 11 seed Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-7(0), 7-5, 6-3 in five hours and 15 minutes. The match ended at 2:50am.
