Djokovic, Sabalenka, Sinner and Wozniacki Advance to Australian Open Second Round

Ten-time Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic was made to work during his opening round at this year’s event, defeating 18-year-old Dino Prizmic 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 in four hours and one minute.

The legendary Serb, who hit 11 aces during the contest, will next face either Alexei Popyrin or Marc Polmans for a place in the third round.

Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Jannik Sinner, No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev, No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 17 seed Frances Tiafoe all advanced to the second round.

On the women’s side, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka breezed into the next round, dismissing Ella Seidel 6-0, 6-1 in 53 minutes. Sabalenka will next face talented Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova for a place in round three.

Other women’s winner on the day included No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari, No. 9 seed Barbora Krejcikova, No. 28 seed Lesia Tsurenko and No. 32 seed Leylah Fernandez.

Fromer winner Caroline Wozniacki received a walkover victory against No. 20 seed Magda Linette 6-2, 2-0, and American Amanda Anisamova returned to Grand Slam action by ousting No. 13 seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-4.

Caroline Dolehide and Alina Korneeva also reached the round of 64.

Monday’s action in Melbourne will feature No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, Naomi Osaka, No. 7 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur.
