World No. 121 Aslan Karatsev upset No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain on Tuesday. Recording a 7-6(1), 6-4 victory, Karatsev used his potent serve and strong backhand to offset his countryman.
Previously reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, Karatsev will next face either No. 8 seed Taylor Fritz or Zhizhen Zhang.
Top seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz had an easier time on court, breezing into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alexander Zverev.
Elsewhere, No. 10 seed Karen Khachanov defeated No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev 7-6(8), 6-4 and Daniel Altmaier ousted Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-0.
Wednesday’s schedule of play at the Magic Box will feature Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula and Carlos Alcaraz.
