Top seed Iga Swiatek had her 37-match winning streak snapped at Wimbledon on Saturday, bowing out to wily veteran Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-2. In a match that lasted one hour and 33 minutes, Cornet hit one ace, won 65 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on five occasions.
Cornet will next face Ajla Tomljanovic for a place in the quarterfinals.
Swiatek recently won her second French Open title in France.
Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Paula Badosa advanced to the fourth round with a 7-5, 7-6(4) victory over two-time former winner Petra Kvitova. Joining Badosa in the next round will be No. 16 seed Simona Halep, No. 17 Elena Rybakina, No. 20 Amanda Anisamova and Petra Martic.
On the men’s side, two-time former winner Rafael Nadal advanced to the fourth round with a straight set victory over No. 27 seed Lorenzo Sonego. Advancing with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, Nadal will next face Botic van de Zandschulp, who dismissed Richard Gasquet in four sets. Nadal recently defeated van de Zandschulp at the French Open last month.
In other third round men’s matches, No. 11 seed Taylor Fritz, No. 19 seed Alex de Minaur, Cristian Garin, Jason Kubler and Brandon Nakashima all advanced.
The match of the day saw Australian Nick Kyrgios upsetting No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) in three hours and 17 minutes. Kyrgios will next face Nakashima for a place in the quarterfinals.
Sunday’s action at Wimbledon will feature Novak Djokovic, Ons Jabeur and Carlos Alcaraz.
