at Prestigious March Events
LOS ANGELES, March 8, 2022 – Tennis Channel will add former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki (@CaroWozniacki) to its coverage of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., and Miami Open in Miami Gardens, Fla., set to begin Wednesday, March 9, at 1 p.m. ET. The 2018 Australian Open champion will provide analysis during both March events, which are commonly referred to as the sport’s “Fifth Slams” for their duration, prestige and deep player fields. From Southern California’s first day of play March 9 through South Florida’s last trophy presentation April 3, Tennis Channel and its affiliated platforms will be the exclusive home of one of the most exciting, important months in the sport.
Wozniacki won the 2011 singles championship in Indian Wells, and was runner up at the event in 2013 and 2010. She also reached the singles final in Miami in 2017. A favorite with players and fans alike while on tour, Wozniacki joins a Tennis Channel on-air lineup that includes Hall of Famers Martina Navratilova (@Martina), Jim Courier, Tracy Austin (@thetracyaustin), Lindsay Davenport (@LDavenport76), Pam Shriver (@PHShriver) and Andy Roddick (@andyroddick) in March.
“I can’t wait to join the team at Tennis Channel in Indian Wells and Miami,” said Wozniacki. “This is one of my favorite times of the tennis season and I have great memories at both tournaments.”
In all, Tennis Channel will provide more than 235 hours of combined live coverage from Indian Wells and Miami, with another 320 hours of encore matches for a total of more than 550 hours. For almost five weeks, the channel will become a 24-hour BNP Paribas Open network and Miami Open network. Viewers will have access to live matches all day followed by encore replays throughout the night and early morning up to the next day’s play (complete schedule below).
Indian Wells competition takes place March 9-20. Telecasts generally begin at 1 p.m. ET daily with lead-in show Tennis Channel Live at the BNP Paribas Open. Close to 120 live hours are planned for the 12-day event, and more than 150 hours of encores. The men’s and women’s doubles finals take place Saturday, March 19, as part of a day session that begins at 2 p.m. ET following the lead-in show. The women’s and men’s singles finals take place Sunday, March 20, with Tennis Channel on air at 3 p.m. ET. In all, the network will devote more than 265 total hours to this year’s tournament.
From Tuesday, March 22-Sunday, April 3, Tennis Channel will be home to the Miami Open. Live coverage most of the 13 days runs from 11 a.m. until after midnight, as Tennis Channel Live at the Miami Open caps each day’s competition. The network will show more than 120 live hours of matches in South Florida this year, and 170 encore hours for 290 overall. Championship weekend will begin Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m. ET, with the women’s singles and men’s doubles finals. The men’s singles and women’s doubles championships are scheduled for Sunday, April 3, also at 1 p.m. ET.
Streaming service Tennis Channel Plus will provide live matches from both the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open, and will offer every match on-demand following its conclusion.
The new Samsung TV Plus channel T2 is free to all viewers of 2017-or-newer model Samsung televisions. It will carry live matches in March that will not air on Tennis Channel. From Wednesday, March 9, through Friday, March 18, four-hour blocks of live matches from Southern California will begin at 2 p.m. ET every day. Wednesday, March 23, through Tuesday, March 29, T2 will run matches from South Florida at 1 p.m. ET each afternoon.
The Bally Sports regional networks (RSNs) will also offer live coverage from both the BNP Paribas Open and Miami Open this month, matches that will not appear on Tennis Channel. The channels, owned by Tennis Channel’s parent company Sinclair Broadcast Group, will provide four-hour windows for seven consecutive days at Indian Wells from Thursday, March 10, through Wednesday March 16, starting at 2 p.m. ET daily. In Miami, four-hour match blocks will air at 1 p.m. ET every day from Wednesday, March 23, through Tuesday, March 29.
On-Air Talent
Including Wozniacki, Tennis Channel’s on-air team has won 34 singles, doubles and mixed-doubles championships in Indian Wells and Miami; 17 at each.
Navratilova claimed back-to-back singles titles in the desert in 1990-1991, and in South Florida in 1985, the same year she also won that event’s doubles and mixed doubles crowns. In 1987 she grabbed a second doubles tournament in Miami. She’ll be joined as an analyst at both events by fellow Hall of Famers Courier, Davenport and Austin. In 1991 Courier became the first man to win the singles “Sunshine Double,” consecutive championships at Indian Wells and Miami, and also won doubles in California. He won the BNP Paribas Open singles title again in 1993. Southern California native Davenport won six tournaments in Indian Wells: singles in 1997 and 2000, and doubles in 1994-1995, 1997-1998, 2000 and 2003.
Hall of Famer Shriver will announce matches at the BNP Paribas Open, where she won the 1989 doubles event (she also won doubles in Miami in 1986-1987). Analyst and Hall of Famer Roddick won doubles in Indian Wells in 2009 and took singles trophies at the Miami Open in 2004 and 2010. He’ll appear on the network during coverage in South Florida this year.
Twins Bob and Mike Bryan (@Bryanbros) are often referred to as the greatest men’s doubles team in tennis history, and will offer their insight to Tennis Channel viewers during both competitions in March this year. They won BNP Paribas Open doubles crowns in 2013-2014, and six times in Miami: 2007-2008, 2014-1015, 2018-2019. Chanda Rubin (@Chanda_Rubin), who won doubles in Indian Wells in 1996, will also provide analysis at both tournament, as will Jan-Michael Gambill (@JanmikeGambill), runner-up in Miami singles in 2001 and doubles in 1999.
Paul Annacone (@paul_annacone) will offer his thoughts during the BNP Paribas Open, while former players Prakash Amritraj (@PrakashAmritraj) and Mark Petchey will do the same in Miami. Annacone won Miami Open doubles championships in 1985 and 1987.
One of Tennis Channel’s longest serving on-air team members, former player Leif Shiras (@ShirasLeif) will call matches at both March events in 2022. Jason Goodall, also a professional tour veteran, will cover both events as well. Longtime network announcer Brett Haber (@BrettHaber) will also announce both tournaments, as will Steve Weissman (@Steve_Weissman) and Ari Wolfe (@ariwolfe). Dani Klupenger (@daniklup) will host Tennis Channel’s tournament desk in Miami with Amritraj again this year.
Weissman will host Tennis Channel Live at the BNP Paribas Open and Tennis Channel Live at the Miami Open, joined by Rubin. Annacone will appear on the show during Indian Wells and Roddick during Miami.
Digital
In addition to live and on-demand matches from both events on streaming service Tennis Channel Plus, Indian Wells marks the return of Tennis Channel’s free Match Point predictor game. Fans will have the opportunity to answer questions through four stages of the BNP Paribas Open for a chance to win multiple prizes, including a trip to next year’s competition. Powered by Bally’s SportCaller, the game debuted during the 2021 tournament and can be played by anyone in the United States at: https://predictor.tennis.com/en.
The network’s Tennis.com website and app are accessible to all, and will keep users up to date with news, highlights and scores from Indian Wells and Miami. The site also features head-to-head matchup statistics, win-probability rates and estimated start times. On-air personalities will provide behind-the-scenes videos and Instagram takeovers at both events, and digital series My Tennis Life players Ajla Tomlijanovic (@ajlatom) and J.J. Wolf (@JJWolf5) will let fans in on their lives on the pro circuit with online and social media posts. March will see the return of “The Break” news as well, and “Prakash Worldwide” (hosted by Amritraj) in Miami.
