Djokovic Eases Past Rublev to Reach Turin Semifinals; Joins Ruud

Wednesday’s action at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy featured an impressive victory by five-time champion Novak Djokovic.

Defeating Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-1 in impressive fashion, Djokovic needed one hour and eight minutes to prevail. Striking 12 aces, while winning 94 percent of his first serve points, Djokovic faced no break points and finished off his memorable performance with 19 winners. Improving to 2-1 against Rublev in lifetime meetings, Djokovic avenged a loss to his opponent in his hometown of Belgrade, Serbia earlier this year.

Reaching the semifinals as a result of his win, Djokovic will next face Daniil Medvedev in his final round robin match on Friday. Djokovic and Medvedev have had many enticing matches throughout the years, with their recent tussle in Astana, Kazakstan this fall.

Djokovic is looking to capture his fifth title of season this week in Turin. The Serbian great added titles in Rome, Italy, Wimbledon, Great Britain, Tel Aviv, Israel and Astana, Kazakstan throughout his limited year. The 35-year-old has 90 career titles to his name and 21 career Majors.

Joining Djokovic thus far in final four is inform Norwegian Casper Ruud. The 23-year-old won an inthralling encounter against American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6). Ruud also defeated Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(4), 6-4 on Sunday.

Elsewhere, reigning Australian and French Open winner Rafael Nadal continued his recent poor form, dropping a disappointing straight match to Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4. Nadal has now lost four-straight matches on Tour, dating back to his fourth-round US Open contest with American Frances Tiafoe. The legendary Spaniard also recently lost to Tommy Paul from the United States at the Rolex Paris Masters in France.

The 36-year-old, who has stated that he will play a full schedule in 2023. His fanbase, which covers millions of fans worldwide, could not be happier. The Spaniard played 12 events in 2022.

In other matches still to come in Turin, Italy, Medvedev will face Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday evening, with Nadal facing Ruud and Thursday and Auger-Aliassime taking on Fritz.

With a record prize money of $4.4 million to the undefeated winner this week, only Djokovic and Ruud have the opportunity to cash in on the top amount. Djokovic remains the highest on-court, prize money earner in history, with just under 160 million collected.

Current world No. 2 Nadal remains in second position with $131 million in prize money won, with recently retired Swiss star Roger Federer having collected $130.5 million throughout his illustrious career.
