Labour Day weekend in New York City at the 2025 US Open will feature world No. 1 Jannik Sinner looking to reach the fourth-round of the event, taking on No. 27 seed Denis Shapovalov in what could be the match of the day.
Shapovalov does own a 1-0 head-to-head lead over Sinner, defeating the Italian giant at the 2021 Australian Open. The Canadian does possess the fire-power to defeat Sinner, and has proven throughout his career that he can defeat the very best in men’s tennis.
That said, Sinner is the best hard-court player in the world and should progress to the fourth-round to play either No. 14 seed Tommy Paul or inform Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan.
Other matches on the day will include No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev taking on No. 25 seed Felix Auger Aliassime, and No. 10 seed Lorenzo Musetti going up against countryman No. 24 seed Flavio Cobolli.
No. 8 seed Alex de Minaur and No. 15 seed Andrey Rublev will also be in action.
On Friday, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz breezed into the fourth round, taking out Luciano Dardari in three comfortable sets.
No. 6 seed Novak Djokovic needed four sets to get by Cameron Norrie, and No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz also reached the sweet 16 with a four set victory over Jerome Kym of Switzerland.
No. 5 seed Ben Shelton and No. 17 seed Frances Tiafoe both crashed out of the event on Day 6. Shelton was forced to retire against Adrian Mannarino after four sets with a shoulder injury, and Tiafoe was comprehensively defeated by towering German Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets.
On Sunday, Alcaraz will return to action to take on Arthur Rinderknech, Djokovic will be back to face Jan Lennard Struff, and Fritz will go up against Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic.
Swiatek, Gauff Look to reach Fourth Round
Reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek returns to action on Saturday to take on No. 29 seed Anna Kalinskaya from Russia.
Swiatek followed up her victory in London with a title in Cincinnati just last week. The six-time Major winner will be the favourite to progress against Kalinskaya during the night session tonight.
During the day, former winner Coco Gauff returns for her third match of the event against Magdalena Frech from Poland. Owning a 2-0 head-to-head lead over Frech, Gauff will continue to work on her new serve against her crafty opponent.
Other matches on the day will feature No. 15 seed Daria Kasatkina taking on No. 23 seed Naomi Osaka, No. 18 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia facing Maria Sakkari, and No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova going up against No. 21 seed Linda Noskova.
No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova and No. 13 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova will also be in action.
On Friday, top seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula, and No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina all advanced.
No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva, No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini and No. 10 seed Emma Navarro were all defeated. Andreeva was taken out in straight sets by inform American Taylor Townsend.
On Sunday, Sabalenka will return to action against Cristina Bucsa, Pegula will take on Ann Li, Rybakina faces Marketa Vondrousova, and Townsend will go up against two-time Major winner Barbora Krejcikova.
