Canadian Bianca Andreescu won her maiden Grand Slam title on Saturday in Flushing Meadows, New York, defeating 23-time Major winner Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5.
Beginning the match with a break of serve, Andreescu increased her lead to 3-1 before breaking for a second time at 5-3.
Storming out to a 5-1 lead in set two and holding a match point, Andreescu started to feel the pressure of the moment and dropped the next four games. Hitting five aces, Andreescu overcame nine aces from Williams throughout the one hour and 40 minute match. Breaking serve on six total occasions, Andreescu won 64 percent of her first serve points.
Winning the Rogers Cup last month against an injured Williams, Andreescu also captured the BNP Paribas Open crown in March. She now owns an 8-0 record against top 10 players this year.
The 19-year-old will reach a career high ranking of No. 5 in the world on Monday. Williams, who has 23-time Majors, lost in last year’s US Open final to Naomi Osaka.
