Alcaraz, Fritz Storm into 2025 Wimbledon Fourth Round
Friday’s Results from Wimbledon
Friday’s action from the All England Club at Wimbledon saw two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz storm into the fourth round, defeating German Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Struff, who had to play two days in a row to defeat No. 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, struggled to keep up with the pace and movement from the higher ranked Spaniard on Friday.
Alcaraz, who needed two hours and 25 minutes to advance, hit 38 winners, 10 aces, and broke serve on five occasions.
The five-time Major winner will next face No. 14 seed Andrey Rublev. The Russian dismissed veteran grass-court specialist Adrian Mannarino in straight sets.
Other winners on the day saw No. 5 seed Taylor Fritz, No. 10 seed Ben Shelton, Cameron Norrie, Kamil Majchrzak, Nicolas Jarry, Jordan Thompson, and Hungarian star Marton Fucsovics all advance.
On Saturday, top seed Jannik Sinner, No. 6 seed and seven-time winner Novak Djokovic and former US Open winner Marin Cilic return to action.
Cilic caused the upset of the day on Thursday by defeating No. 4 seed Jack Draper in four sets.
Sabalenka Ends Raducanu’s Campaign
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka continued her quest for a maiden Wimbledon title on Friday in front of the Centre Court crowd, defeating home-country favourite and former US Open winner Emma Raducanu 7-6(6), 6-4.
Sabalenka, who has never favoured playing on grass-courts, showed how her ever-evolving game remains the best in the world.
Hitting 31 winners, four aces and breaking Raducanu on four occasions, Sabalenka will next face No. 24 seed Elise Mertens for a place in the final eight. Mertens defeated No. 14 seed Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-6(4).
Other results on the day featured Sonya Kartel, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Laura Siegemund, Solana Sierra, No 13 seed Amanda Anisimova and No. 30 Linda Noskova all advanced to the sweet 16.
Upsets on Friday saw No. 6 seed Madison Keys lose to Siegemund, and four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka dropped a three set encounter to Pavlyuchenkova.
Day 6 action at Wimbledon will see No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva, No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek and defending champion and No. 17 seed Barbora Krejcikova on court.
