Wimbledon 2026 Day 4 Preview: Swiatek Faces Pliskova Test, Berrettini Battles Fils, Rybakina Targets Third Round

The second round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships continues on Thursday with another outstanding slate of matches at the All England Club, as Grand Slam champions, former finalists and rising stars compete for places in the third round.

Defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek continues her title defense against former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, while former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini meets one of the ATP Tour’s brightest young talents in Arthur Fils. On the women’s side, 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina looks to continue her impressive grass-court campaign against American Caty McNally.

With the tournament beginning to take shape, every match carries increasing importance as players look to establish themselves as genuine championship contenders. The second round concludes Thursday before the draw narrows to the final 32 players heading into the weekend.

Karolina Pliskova vs. Iga Swiatek (3)

The Centre Court spotlight shines on one of the day’s most intriguing women’s contests.

Although Iga Swiatek has transformed herself into one of the game’s elite grass-court players over the past several seasons, Karolina Pliskova possesses exactly the style capable of challenging anyone on the lawns of Wimbledon.

Pliskova’s enormous first serve, flat groundstrokes and aggressive court positioning have long made her dangerous on grass. A former Wimbledon finalist, the Czech veteran understands how quickly momentum can swing on the sport’s fastest surface.

Swiatek, meanwhile, survived a difficult opening-round battle against Taylor Townsend, showing championship composure after dropping the second set before advancing in three sets. The defending champion appears increasingly comfortable moving on grass, with her improved serve and more aggressive court positioning making her one of the tournament favorites.

Keys to the Match

  • Can Pliskova consistently earn free points behind her serve?
  • Will Swiatek neutralize Pliskova’s first strike with her elite return game?
  • Which player controls the shorter rallies?

If Pliskova serves at an exceptionally high percentage, she has the weapons to pressure Swiatek. However, over the course of a full match, Swiatek’s movement, consistency and defensive skills should gradually wear down the Czech veteran.

Prediction: Swiatek in two competitive sets.

Matteo Berrettini vs. Arthur Fils (20)

Perhaps the most anticipated men’s match of the day features contrasting generations.

Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini arrives full of confidence after surviving an emotional four-set marathon against Stan Wawrinka in what became the Swiss legend’s final Wimbledon appearance. Berrettini once again showcased why grass remains his best surface, firing one huge serve after another while dominating with his forehand.

Across the net stands Arthur Fils, the explosive French star whose athleticism and fearless shot-making have rapidly elevated him into the ATP’s upper tier.

The matchup presents an intriguing tactical battle.

Berrettini wants:

  • Short points
  • Big serving
  • Heavy forehands
  • Slice backhands that stay low

Fils wants:

  • Longer rallies
  • Physical exchanges
  • Higher tempo
  • Opportunities to attack Berrettini’s backhand wing

Grass traditionally rewards Berrettini’s strengths more than almost any player on tour. His ability to serve above 135 mph and dictate with his forehand remains among the ATP’s most dangerous combinations.

Fils certainly possesses the athleticism to extend rallies, but if Berrettini continues serving as he did in the opening round, the Italian could once again become one of the tournament’s most dangerous unseeded players.

Prediction: Berrettini in four sets.

Caty McNally vs. Elena Rybakina (2)

Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina returns to the lawns looking to reinforce her status as one of the leading title contenders.

After overcoming a challenging opening-round encounter, Rybakina now faces American Caty McNally, who has quietly developed into one of the more dangerous all-court players on the WTA Tour.

McNally’s willingness to attack the net and mix pace makes her a difficult opponent on grass. She is comfortable finishing points at the net and possesses excellent doubles instincts that translate naturally onto Wimbledon lawns.

However, Rybakina’s weapons remain among the very best in women’s tennis.

Her first serve is arguably the most effective on the WTA Tour, while her clean ball-striking allows her to dictate from both wings with remarkable ease. Few players hit through grass courts as effortlessly as the Kazakh star.

What to Watch

  • McNally’s net approaches
  • Rybakina’s first-serve percentage
  • Baseline aggression from both players
  • Return games on second serves

If Rybakina maintains a high first-serve percentage, McNally may struggle to create enough return opportunities to remain competitive throughout the match.

Prediction: Rybakina in straight sets.

Players to Watch on Day 4

Several major championship contenders will also be looking to book their places in the third round as Wimbledon continues to build toward an exciting second week.

Swiatek seeks another successful step in her title defense, Berrettini hopes to remind the tennis world why he remains one of the sport’s most dangerous grass-court specialists, while Rybakina continues her pursuit of a second Wimbledon crown.

With the grass beginning to wear and the pressure steadily increasing, Thursday’s schedule promises another memorable day at the All England Club.

Day 4 Predictions

  • Iga Swiatek def. Karolina Pliskova
  • Matteo Berrettini def. Arthur Fils
  • Elena Rybakina def. Caty McNally

As Wimbledon 2026 reaches its pivotal second-round conclusion, every victory becomes increasingly valuable. The winners will move within striking distance of the fourth round, where the race for the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Singles titles truly begins.
