French Open 2026 Preview: Can Joao Fonseca Continue His Dream Run Against Casper Ruud at Roland Garros?

The second week of the 2026 French Open begins on Sunday, May 31, with several blockbuster Round of 16 matchups set to shape the championship picture at Roland Garros. Among the most anticipated contests are two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud against Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca, four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek versus red-hot Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, and rising Czech star Jakub Mensik facing former Monte Carlo champion Andrey Rublev.

With Novak Djokovic and World No. 1 Jannik Sinner already eliminated from the men’s draw, the race for the Coupe des Mousquetaires has suddenly become wide open. Meanwhile, the women’s draw continues to feature elite contenders battling for a place in the quarterfinals.

Casper Ruud vs Joao Fonseca: Experience Meets the Tournament’s Breakout Star

Perhaps no player has captured global attention more than Joao Fonseca during the opening week in Paris.

The 19-year-old Brazilian produced one of the biggest victories of the season when he stunned 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic after rallying from two sets down in a nearly five-hour epic on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Fonseca became only the second player in Djokovic’s career to defeat him after trailing by two sets.

Joao Fonseca enters the fourth round full of confidence, but the challenge only gets tougher against clay-court specialist Casper Ruud.

Ruud has quietly survived multiple marathon matches himself. The Norwegian rallied from two sets down against Tommy Paul and has once again demonstrated why Roland Garros remains his most successful Grand Slam tournament. The former finalist owns one of the heaviest topspin forehands on tour and thrives in extended clay-court rallies.

Key Tactical Battle

Fonseca’s explosive first-strike tennis has overwhelmed opponents throughout the tournament. His forehand is among the most dangerous weapons remaining in the draw.

However, Ruud represents a unique challenge because of his consistency, physical endurance, and ability to absorb pace on clay. If the Norwegian can extend rallies and test Fonseca’s legs after two grueling five-set victories, the match could gradually swing in his favor.

Prediction

Fonseca’s confidence is soaring, but Ruud’s experience in the latter stages of Roland Garros should prove decisive.

Prediction: Casper Ruud in four sets.

Marta Kostyuk vs Iga Swiatek: The Ultimate Test for the Ukrainian Star

One of the most intriguing women’s matches features Marta Kostyuk against Roland Garros royalty Iga Swiatek.

Kostyuk enters the fourth round on a remarkable 15-match clay-court winning streak and has emerged as one of the most improved players on the WTA Tour during the 2026 season. Her Madrid Open title run elevated her into the Top 15 and established her as a genuine threat at major tournaments.

Yet history heavily favors Swiatek.

The Polish superstar owns a staggering 43-3 career record at Roland Garros and has defeated Kostyuk in all three previous meetings without dropping a set. Swiatek advanced comfortably past Magda Linette and continues her pursuit of a fifth French Open championship.

Why This Match Matters

For years, Swiatek has been the standard on clay. Her ability to control court positioning, dictate rallies with topspin, and defend relentlessly makes her uniquely difficult to beat in Paris.

Kostyuk’s aggressive baseline game gives her a better chance than most players, but she must consistently hit through one of the best clay-court defenders of the modern era.

Prediction

Kostyuk is playing the best clay-court tennis of her career, but Swiatek’s Roland Garros pedigree remains unmatched.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

Jakub Mensik vs Andrey Rublev: Next-Generation Power Meets Proven Experience

The men’s draw also features a fascinating clash between rising Czech star Jakub Menšík and experienced Russian contender Andrey Rublev.

Mensik has quietly assembled one of the most impressive tournaments of his young career. After surviving a physically exhausting five-set battle earlier in the event, he followed it with a statement victory over Top-10 seed Alex de Minaur.

Rublev, meanwhile, has advanced efficiently and appears to be rediscovering the consistency that once made him a fixture inside the ATP Top 10. The Russian defeated Nuno Borges in straight sets and continues to demonstrate his trademark baseline aggression.

Match Keys

Mensik possesses one of the biggest serves remaining in the tournament and has shown tremendous composure under pressure.

Rublev’s advantage lies in experience. He understands how to manage momentum swings during Grand Slam matches and remains one of the most dangerous ball-strikers on clay when his forehand is firing.

The longer the match goes, the more Mensik’s physical recovery may become a factor after spending significant time on court earlier in the week.

Prediction

This could easily become one of the most entertaining matches of the day.

Prediction: Andrey Rublev in five sets.

French Open 2026 Outlook: A New Era Emerging

The men’s draw has undergone a dramatic transformation following the exits of Djokovic, Sinner, and several other top contenders. As a result, emerging stars such as Fonseca and Mensik suddenly find themselves within touching distance of a Grand Slam semifinal.

At the same time, established clay-court performers like Ruud and Rublev recognize that opportunities to win a major title do not come often.

On the women’s side, Swiatek continues to defend her status as the queen of clay, but challengers including Kostyuk, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Naomi Osaka are all building momentum heading into the second week.

French Open May 31 Predictions

Match Prediction
Casper Ruud vs Joao Fonseca Ruud in 4 sets
Marta Kostyuk vs Iga Swiatek Swiatek in 2 sets
Jakub Mensik vs Andrey Rublev Rublev in 5 sets

Sunday’s Round of 16 action could ultimately determine who emerges as the leading championship favorite at Roland Garros 2026. With young stars challenging established contenders and quarterfinal spots on the line, May 31 promises to deliver some of the most compelling tennis of the tournament.
