Alcaraz Reaches Japan Open Final; Sinner Advances to Beijing Open Semifinals

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz reached his ninth straight final on Sunday at the ATP Tour Japan Open in Tokyo, defeating No. 4 seed Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Needing two hours and eight minutes to advance, Alcaraz improved to 5-1 against Ruud in lifetime meetings and will next face No. 2 seed Taylor Fritz in Tuesday’s final.
Fritz advanced to the championship round with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jenson Brooksby.
Alcaraz recently lost to Fritz at last week’s Laver Cup in San Francisco, California. Alcaraz owns a 3-1 head-to-head lead over the Fritz, defeating the American twice on hard-courts.
China Open—Beijing, China
Top seed Jannik Sinner stormed into the semifinals of the China Open on Monday, dispatching Fabian Marozsan from Hungary 6-1, 7-5.
Improving to 2-0 against Marozsan in lifetime meetings, Sinner will next face No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur for a place in Wednesday’s final.
De Minaur advanced to the final four when No. 7 seed Jakub Mensik retired trailing 4-1 in the first set.
Other results on the day saw No. 8 seed Daniil Medvedev improve to 14-7 in lifetime meetings against No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev.
Defeating the German 6-3, 6-3, Medvedev will next face Learner Tien for a place in the finals. Tien advanced when No. 4 seed Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire trailing 6-4, 6-3, 3-0.
Tien defeated Medvedev in five sets at the Australian Open in January.
Swiatek Advances
On the women’s side, top seed Iga Swiatek needed only one set to reach the final 16, defeating Camila Osorio 6-0. The six-time Major winner will next face No. 16 seed Emma Navvaro, who progressed when her opponent Lois Boisson was also forced to retired trailing 6-2, 1-0.
Other winners on the day included No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 23 seed Marta Kostyuk, No. 26 seed Linda Noskova, Sonay Kartal, and Anastasia Potapova.
Tuesday’s action will feature No. 3 seed Amanda Anisimova and No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini.
