Top seed Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the semifinals of the ATP Tour Japan Open on Sunday, easily dismissing Brandan Nakashima from the United States 6-2, 6-4.
Needing 80 minutes to advance, Alcaraz will next face Laver Cup doubles partner Casper Ruud on Monday. Ruud advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Aleksandar Vukic from Australia.

Alcaraz leads Ruud 4-1 in career head-to-head meetings.
The day’s other two quarterfinals featured Jenson Brooksby ousting No. 3 seed Holger Rune 6-3, 6-3, and No. 2 seed Taylor Fritz needing two hours and 19 minutes to defeat compatriot Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3.
Fritz leads Brooksby 2-1 in career head-to-head encounters.
China Open—Beijing, China
No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev required two hours and 39 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open on Sunday, dismissing Corentin Moutet 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
The German, who is seeking his second title of the year, will next face No. 8 seed Daniil Medvedev for a place in the semifinals.
Medvedev was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina earlier in the day.
Other results on Sunday included Learner Tien dispatching Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2, and No. 4 seed Lorenzo Musetti defeating Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3.
On Monday, top seed Jannik Sinner returns to face Fabian Marozsan, and No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur will take on No. 7 seed Jakub Mensik.
On the ladies side, No. 2 seed Coco Gauff, No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini, No. 13 seed Karolina Muchova, No. 15 seed Belinda Bencic and Marie Bouzkova all advanced to the round of 16.
Gauff needed three tight sets to overcome No. 24 seed Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
Gauff will next face Bencic for a place in the quarterfinals.
On Monday, top seed Iga Swiatek, No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 7 seed Qinwen Zheng and No. 16 seed Emma Navarro all return to action.
Swiatek, who is in great form, will be aiming to win her fourth title of the year in Beijing. She recently captured the title in Seoul, Korea.
